Houston is also the county seat of Harris County, as well as the economic center of Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, which is the 6th largest metropolitan area in the States, having nearly 6 million people living within its limits.
UH first began as Houston Junior College (HJC), opened in March, 1927, which was operated and controlled by the Houston Independent School District (HISD). In April 1934, Houston Junior College officially became University of Houston, when the HISD’s Board of Education adopted a resolution to make the school a four-year institution.
Today, UH is the 3rd largest university in Texas, as well as the 23rd largest one in USA, having an enrollment of 27 000 students to whom the university offers 12 academic colleges through which it provides 300 degree programs, more than 110 bachelor’s, over 130 master’s, 54 doctoral and 3 special professional degrees in law, pharmacy, and optometry. According to the U.S. News and World Report, UH is the 2nd most ethnically diverse national university in the country, being known for its diverse student population.
The athletic teams from UH are known as the Houston Cougars, who compete in 16 diverse sports in the Conference USA. Since 1995, when the conference was formed, the teams have won 33 C-USA titles, and in the past 61 years, the Cougars have won 16 national titles in men’s golf, have had five NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four appearances, including two College World Series appearances.
